Since time immemorial, the tiger has been considered as a Royal Animal. Often, The Tiger as the National Animal of India symbolizes the power, strength, elegance, alertness, intelligence and endurance of the nation.

Corbett Tiger Reserve originally called Hailey National Park, then Ramganga National Park, it was renamed in 1957 after the legendary tiger hunter, Edward James Jim Corbett (1875–1955), author and pioneer conservationist, who put Kumaon on the map with his book The Man-Eaters of Kumaon. The British hunter was greatly revered by local people for killing tigers that had developed a taste for human flesh, but he eventually shot more wildlife with his camera than with his gun.

The Corbett Tiger Reserve was brought under Project Tiger when this flagship programme to save the big cats was launched by India in 1973.

Project Tiger in India - Tiger Reserves In India

Due to the extreme threat of extinction of the tiger species from the country, the Indian Government launched Project Tiger in 1973. Project tiger was focused to preserve the remaining tiger population in the country and increase the breeding of the species so that new population could be added to the existing one. Under this Project, 23 tiger reserves were established throughout the country, covering an area of 33,406 sq. km for providing safe and comfortable shelter to the tigers in the natural environment. By 1993, there was much improvement in the tiger population in the country. However despite the increase in population, the population of tigers in the country is still not satisfactory compared to the effort and money put in the project. This is due to the illegal poaching of the tigers and negligence of authorities towards the alarming situation of the tiger population in the country.

India’s tiger conservation movement and Asia’s first endeavour to have a national park, the Corbett National Park turns 75 this year, marking a string of successes despite a few incidents of man-animal conflict

1318-sq-km Corbett Tiger Reserve has extremely varied topography and vegetation. This gives it a rich diversity of habitat and natural beauty. Flat valleys are interspersed with hilly ridges and the Park's rolling grasslands known as the 'Chaurs' provide visitors with an excellent view of the animals. The Ramganga River flows through the Park and little forest streams tumble through the ravines.
